<itunes:summary>Google recently made it's intelligent assistant app Google Now available to iOS devices. Previously only available on Android devices, Google Now pushes out information when you need it, telling you the current temperature while getting dressed in the morning or giving you a heads-up that there's more traffic than normal for your morning commute. Google Now will even alert travelers on their flight status (as we found out on a recent business trip).

Many listeners have asked us how to get started on Google Now. For starters, Google Now is not a separate app on your phone -- users must update their current Google Search app and have an existing Google account. Once the update is made, Google Now uses your location and interests to give you relevant real-time information. For example, if you have an interest in coffee, Google Now alerts you when a coffee shop is close by.

However, Google does not equal RSS. It simply had the best approach, which included taking on all the overhead and infrastructure for gathering millions of feeds for individuals and building a free tool which could track and allowed sharing of content.

All is not lost - there are options for software based on Windows PCs and Macs, as well as web-based tools and apps for Apple and Android-based devices. What choices do you have? See the links below.

While there is discussion and debate as to how a 6-second video could be of value to business, we do believe there is an application. Our take is to use it as a satellite around content you already create - for example:

1) Show some behind the scenes outtakes if filming a professional video or webcast

2) Take some quick sound bites as outtakes from a podcast

3) At an industry conference - ask a question and snap the answers on Vine (with folk's permission of course)

4) Or even just take some footage of things you and your team do and work on each day.

Just like 140 characters by themselves are not enough on Twitter - it becomes a mechanism for amplifying or acting as ancillary content to other efforts you make in the digital world.

Looking for opportunities to move beyond social and connect via phone or a live meeting? We do also! Here we discuss how we cultivate our listening skills on social for following keywords, phrases and searches as much as we follow people and business.

We take the results of these searches and threads and look for opportunities to introduce ourselves, get some time on the phone or meet in person to learn their goals on social media.

This can be done across many platforms - Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest as well as the obvious LinkedIn choice. In our case - we found on LinkedIn that a premium account gave us more flexibility here for utilizing advanced search and filtering, InMail and Connections handling.

How are you gathering and discovering new connections that you seek to turn into relationships and business opportunities?

Don't miss previous episodes where we've discussed social listening and the tools of social search.

<itunes:summary>Find us on Stitcher Radio! See us at http://www.stitcher.com/socialmedia. Use promo code socialmedia when installing the app on Android or iOS.

How does one handle responding or NOT responding on social media? Not from the perspective of baiting for arguments, hateful speech or down the negative path. This is more from the perspective of handling things like Recommendations you cannot display - or even just not being comfortable or able to comment or engage on a thread of social messages.

We look at these as opportunities. For example, if Recommendations on LinkedIn are prohibited for you, a setting is available that keeps them from being displayed on your profile. However, you will still receive a message that someone has taken the time to write a Recommendation for you. This is where you can respond directly, say thank you, and perhaps explain why you cannot display their Recommendation. My next comment would then be to mention that they are welcome to tell their peers, friends and family those same kind words.

I also, personally, don't believe that religion and politics has a place in business communications unless that is specifically your business model. Those conversations are often much better held in person where complicated topics are more deftly handled.

Use your best judgement and common sense applies to your social engagements and conversations.</itunes:summary>

Pinterest continues to emerge and evolve. In fact, Pew Research shows Pinterest as fastest growing social platform today.

Also - Pinterest has evolved their business offering with analytics which will offer some insights into how Pinterest users are interacting and engaging with your pins and boards.

We like Pinterest and consider it the visual "Twitter" - with an easy to use interface and much more intimate experience with strong imagery driving the topics and thoughts shared. Pinterest can also serve as a great observation space, searching for info graphics and concepts you are interested in following or sharing.

Our own Pinterest account is focused on getting to know us - what tech we like and use, the books we are reading, the events and activities we participate in as an organization.

In this episode of the Social Media Minute, we discuss Google Authorship and how you can connect the content you have authored and created to the Google ecosystem. This can easily be accomplished on a Wordpress or Blogger site, but can also be used when writing for other sites.

There are some steps to accommodate this. See the Google reference information below.

<itunes:summary>The Social Media Minute Podcast has reached its 100th episode! Looking back at our past episodes, Twitter has been a hot topic in our series mostly because people are baffled when it comes to how exactly Twitter works.

We frequently find the lingo of Twitter and a misunderstanding of how it can be used effectively for business are stumbling blocks to folks using the platform. In our century episode, we return to the roots of the Social Media Minute and define the hashtag, along with reviewing a couple of ways Twitter can be used.

Additionally, we have created a new infographic showcasing all of the topics we have discussed leading up to our 100th episode. If you see an episode you might have missed or would like to learn more about, all of our podcasts can be found on iTunes. We look forward to many more podcasts to come and we thank you for listening!

A rapidly trending topic continues to be LinkedIn Skills Endorsements. They are a much more gray area than Recommendations as it pertains to being classified as testimonials under SEC guidelines for the financial services industry. Moreover - even where social media might be prohibited by certain firms - we are seeing Skills Endorsements turned on within LinkedIn profiles for those advisors.

Likewise - for the other side of the coin - not all firms are agreeing that they are testimonials - and some will allow them while continuing to require their advisors to disable Recommendations from being published on the profile within LinkedIn.

We discuss this and our experience hearing from advisors at recent conferences.

<itunes:summary>Somewhat overlooked in the news about LinkedIn profile upgrades in past months (and past social media minute episodes) - is the fact you can now add interactive content to your profile.

For starters - in the Linkedin Summary you can add two items - either documents, images or video (I used a PDF plus a Power Point presentation in my profile). Even better - you can add images, videos and documents to each position you add to your profile as well.

This enables you to continue to accentuate how you define your profile, adding pieces of content you have created, recorded or otherwise have the rights to share. Be sure if you are using content from previous employment that you have confirmed the information you add is first 'ready for public consumption' and second, you have permission to share it.

This functionality continues to further our view that defining yourself on LinkedIn is part resume or CV, part a view into you (your volunteerism, charitable activities and other affiliations you may choose to share) and also your personal and professional development (education, associations and publications, etc).</itunes:summary>

We like the Privacy 101 and Grid of Default Settings since it makes it very clear how our data will be used.

One other great tactic here- they link to the new changes in advance of the date they take effect - giving their users an opportunity to read, understand and ask or comment on it without it becoming a viral crisis</itunes:summary>
